Empowering Future Leaders: Sustainability at ELIS Murcia
At ELIS Murcia, we are deeply committed to fostering a greener and more sustainable future for our students and community. As part of our ongoing efforts to promote environmental awareness and action, we partner with Sustainability at School, a consultancy led by Clare Garey, to guide our path towards sustainable practices.
On Monday, 27th January, a special workshop was held for our Upper School Eco-leaders, designed to enhance student advocacy within our Sustainability @ELIS Murcia programme. These sessions were led by Anja Nielsen, a School Sustainability Consultant who works with Clare Garey. Anja brought a wealth of experience in child rights advocacy and education, having worked with prestigious organisations such as Save the Children UK, UNICEF and the National Education Union (UK).
During the workshop, students explored their rights to be heard in decisions affecting them, their right to quality education that respects the natural environment and their right to a clean and healthy environment. They delved into the concept of Advocacy—the art of influencing decision-makers to act towards sustainability. Key questions like ‘What do you want to change?’, ‘Who can make this change?’ and ‘How will you influence them?’ guided their discussions.
This initiative highlights ELIS Murcia’s dedication to equipping our students with the knowledge and skills to become agents of change. We believe in leading by example, implementing sustainable practices within our school, educating our staff and empowering our students to advocate for a better future. Through our collaboration with Sustainability at School and the expertise of professionals like Clare Garey and Anja Nielsen, we have prepared our future leaders to be advocates for sustainability both in our community and beyond.
