Alumnus of the Year 2023-24

Manuel García Martínez

Manuel graduated from ELIS Murcia 10 years ago having spent his entire school life here from the age of 3 to 18. He was always a curious student who displayed great skills in various areas of the British and Spanish curriculum. He stood out for his linguistic abilities, achieving a C2 level in English before the age of 18. Additionally, he studied German for 8 years and finished school with extensive knowledge of both the language and its culture. In Upper School, he actively participated in class with energy and enthusiasm. From a young age, he had the ability to question the why behind what he was learning to better understand it.

At the age of 15, Manuel decided that medicine was his path, even fearing disappointing his family by wanting to dedicate his professional life to serving others. In Sixth Form, he began to specialize with the clear goal of studying medicine at university. He gained practical experience at the University Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca thanks to our Work Experience programme and studied subjects in the Health Sciences field. During this time, he never neglected his passion for music, literature, and sports. Despite being a focused student well-prepared for his current field, he is what we call a true all-rounder.

Manuel, how does it feel to have been chosen as the ELIS Murcia 'Alumnus of the Year' ? What memories do you cherish from your time at school?

Being chosen as the ELIS Murcia Alumnus of the Year is a tremendous honour for me. This recognition took me by complete surprise, yet it fills me with immense joy and pride. Receiving the email announcing this accolade was a delightful and unexpected moment. It's always heart-warming to hear from my school, a place where I not only developed academically but also grew as an individual. Reflecting on my years at ELIS brings forth a flood of memories, from cherished friendships that endure to this day to the invaluable guidance of numerous teachers.
Spending 15 years at the school is a testament to the deep impact it has had on my life. While the duration was lengthy, the majority of my recollections are marked by beautiful and joyful moments that have enriched my journey through this significant period of my life.

How is the job going? What is it that you like the most about your work?

Currently, I find myself immersed in the midst of my specialist training, navigating through a realm of new experiences. Witnessing my evolution as a doctor, making decisions based on the knowledge I've acquired, is a gratifying journey. What I find most fulfilling in my profession is not just the act of healing, but the opportunity to delve into the depths of people's fears and passions. This aspect allows me to grow not only as a professional but also as a compassionate human being. There are moments when I feel profoundly grateful and fortunate for the person I have become and the blessings in my life, especially when contrasted with the challenges I encounter in my interactions with others.
The diversity inherent in my job is a source of constant fascination. Each day presents a unique tapestry of cases, with patients rarely sharing identical illnesses, contexts, or underlying pathologies. This inherent variety adds a stimulating dimension, particularly when tailoring the management and treatment to suit each individual. Essentially, in my role, no two days are alike, and this dynamic aspect of the profession keeps me engaged and impassioned.

To what extent do you think that your training at ELIS facilitated your current professional life?

ELIS provided me with the invaluable opportunity to flourish in an environment where every question was encouraged, leading me to seek answers actively. The significance of languages, particularly English, cannot be overstated—they have proven to be immensely beneficial. Moreover, the early exposure to diverse cultures has equipped me with adaptability skills crucial not only in personal growth but also in my journey as a doctor.

What about your spare time? What do you do to enjoy yourself when you’re not working?

Currently, spare time is a precious commodity for me—a common aspect of the evolving responsibilities that come with adulthood. However, this scarcity has heightened my awareness and appreciation for the occasional moments of free time that do come my way. Despite the busy schedule, I prioritize staying physically active and engaged in sports, including gym sessions, cycling, paddle with friends, and trekking.
Yet, amidst the hustle, I find immense joy in dedicating quality time to my loved ones—my girlfriend, family, and friends. These cherished individuals not only make every moment worthwhile but also add depth and meaning to my life. In the midst of a demanding routine, the shared moments with those closest to me become a sanctuary of connection and significance.

Finally, where do you see yourself in a few years time?

While it may seem like a standard response, envisioning my future, I aspire to sustain and even amplify the happiness I currently experience. Building a family holds a special place in my dreams, alongside the pursuit of my professional and personal aspirations. I aim to reach and surpass the standards and goals I've set for myself, continually evolving in both my personal and professional spheres. Throughout this journey, my desire is to be surrounded by the supportive presence of the people I deeply care for, fostering a harmonious and fulfilling life.
